I really didn't appreciate the tools that I had accumulated over the years on my computer. It took me ages to set it all up again. Little things like a flash plugin, java and winrar had not even crossed my mind. As of right now I've got  DVD burning software downloaded,  limewire and photoshop CS3 now! i can't figure how CS3 is different than CS2 though.

Vista was pre-installed. It sucks! I'm not kidding, it seems the more aethetically pleasing Microsoft get the less useful it is. When it gets held up because I'm overloading the CPU (by doing too much at once) it won't recover. I have to restart the whole system which never happened on XP. I can't delete anything without the system double checking with me for permission. I've always supported windows basically because the Mac desktop layout and basic functions don't agree with me but microsoft need to cut down on the unnecessary crap. They need to strike a balance between beginners and experienced users. Optional support should be the way to go rather than a one for all policy.

I still have to install imageready and my printer. One great thing is my inbuilt wireless connection. No more fiddling about with my USB driver and worrying I may knock it out. No more worrying that the deviced will have crashed because I put the laptop in hibernation. I log on and the internet is straight there.

So tired...need to sleep.

I've heard that Windows Vista isn't that great, I don't understand why they had to get rid of XP and all their other applications. I guess it's windows just trying to look more popular.

Vista has a lot of problems. My brother has XP on his big gaming computer (I think) and has Vista on his laptop and he says it can be ever annoying.

XP is still around. Service Pack 3 for XP was just released.

windows are trying to look like they are doing something. Vista looks nicer but I don't see any inprovements in the way it works its just...different. You can see the leap between win95 and winXP but between XP and Vista its all just visual. Its file menus like lists rather than thumbnails although I'm almost certain that option is lurking around hidden under new option tags

I do not envy you. It's the stuff you use all the time you don't think of and really miss when it not there. It becomes a pain to find it and put in on the new computer. I'm not looking forward to when I have to do it.

*hugs*

on a very off topic side note, in your header why no Giles?

Almost all my crushes are older men. Its been that way for years then I grew up and all the hotter guys were even older. I'm going to end up married to a 65 year old at 30! :o

Here's what I've got
#1 disable UAC in the users/accounts section in the control panel. This stops the prompts.

#2 This machine should be on SP1 (6001.18000). If it isn't, I suggest updating. There are performance and appcompat improvements.

#3 If your machine is constantly locking up, wait for it to BSOD. You are likely having an issue with a driver. Standard crashes in the shell recover back to the desktop in Vista. Hard lockups indicate a driver issue (in this case it's probably video) and it is the exact same behavior in XP. You probably didn't have this issue in XP because that machine had different hardware and well, XP is a different kernel - different graphics architecture but I digress.

If the machine never BSODs (sometimes this does happen) press ctrl+alt+delete and see if it will bring up the task manager. End the application that is not responding. The system should recover without a reboot.

The advantage of letting it BSOD is that watchdog traps the error, it is reported to MS and the error is also reported back to you in "Problems Reports and Solutions" in the control panel. If MS knows of the bug/issue - it will provide you with the solution. If you power cycle the machine, it can't catch the error and dump the stack for analysis.

#4 If you cannot use Vista, approach HP about a downgrade. Many OEMs allow for a downgrade to XP but it's something you have to request. If your machine is not a dual core with at least 2GB of RAM, it's probably a good idea.

Re: Here's what I've got
I never get fatal crashes. Its freezing. I get pop up messages that windows explorer has ceased to work meaning I can't work with my desktop. It can't recover from that so I have to reset the system. Task Manager has the applications going from responding to not responding every minute. Just when I get back to work and click the window it ceases to respond.

Re: Here's what I've got

This is where Vista is different from XP. It should recover from that. After that message, it should say that explorer is restarting.

Are you rebooting before this process completes?

As long as the UI is prompting you with messages, the system is not hardlocked.

I would check in PRS (Problems Reports and Solutions) to see if there is a solution to the problem. It sounds like a video driver but could also be a bad codec, antivirus appcompat issue, etc. It depends on what windows you had open, what services where running, and what apps were running. It might very well be performance. It might not.

If explorer does not start and you are left with the desktop after explorer crashes, press ctrl+alt+delete then file>new task >explorer.exe. Be aware that you are running your desktop elevated at this point (i.e. as admin)

Task Manager has the applications going from responding to not responding every minute.

Three things

1. Uninstall any HP/OEM craplets that are on the system or block them from starting via msconfig.
2. Make sure that SP1 is installed. This is important.
3. Use Readyboost to improve performance if your system is running low on memory. You'll notice this if it is paging (which is probably what's happening)

I remember having to go through something similar when I had to reinstall everything on my laptop that decided to crash one day. It took forever and I kept forgetting simple/everyday programs that I eventually just made a list so that, if this should ever happen again - or I get a new laptop - I have something readily available to remind me of what I need.

I haven't really heard anything great about Vista myself and I can't believe that my local electronics store, and almost all of them really have resorted to just stocking up on computers with Vista. Luckily, or maybe not?, I still have the XP Professional Software, that I had to purchase for my laptop, so that if/when I get a new computer and I can't stand Vista I can use my XP... I think.

Good luck with your system. :D Oh and that inbuilt wireless built sounds great!

I bought Vista this last time biggest mistake I ever made. I ended up having to shell out another $400 to upgrade my video card and my power supply. I also added another 2gigs of memory. Just Vista running sucked up all my RAM. There wasn't anything left over for the rest of my functions.

I hate Vista!

Hmm... I must really be the odd person out because I LOVE Vista. Once I removed all the annoying software that came with my VIAO and changed a few permissions around, I found it to be very enjoyable. I don't use the sidebar or anything but the other features work for me. *shrugs*
