I really didn't appreciate the tools that I had accumulated over the years on my computer. It took me ages to set it all up again. Little things like a flash plugin, java and winrar had not even crossed my mind. As of right now I've got DVD burning software downloaded, limewire and photoshop CS3 now! i can't figure how CS3 is different than CS2 though.
Vista was pre-installed. It sucks! I'm not kidding, it seems the more aethetically pleasing Microsoft get the less useful it is. When it gets held up because I'm overloading the CPU (by doing too much at once) it won't recover. I have to restart the whole system which never happened on XP. I can't delete anything without the system double checking with me for permission. I've always supported windows basically because the Mac desktop layout and basic functions don't agree with me but microsoft need to cut down on the unnecessary crap. They need to strike a balance between beginners and experienced users. Optional support should be the way to go rather than a one for all policy.
I still have to install imageready and my printer. One great thing is my inbuilt wireless connection. No more fiddling about with my USB driver and worrying I may knock it out. No more worrying that the deviced will have crashed because I put the laptop in hibernation. I log on and the internet is straight there.
So tired...need to sleep.

#2 This machine should be on SP1 (6001.18000). If it isn't, I suggest updating. There are performance and appcompat improvements.
#3 If your machine is constantly locking up, wait for it to BSOD. You are likely having an issue with a driver. Standard crashes in the shell recover back to the desktop in Vista. Hard lockups indicate a driver issue (in this case it's probably video) and it is the exact same behavior in XP. You probably didn't have this issue in XP because that machine had different hardware and well, XP is a different kernel - different graphics architecture but I digress.
If the machine never BSODs (sometimes this does happen) press ctrl+alt+delete and see if it will bring up the task manager. End the application that is not responding. The system should recover without a reboot.
The advantage of letting it BSOD is that watchdog traps the error, it is reported to MS and the error is also reported back to you in "Problems Reports and Solutions" in the control panel. If MS knows of the bug/issue - it will provide you with the solution. If you power cycle the machine, it can't catch the error and dump the stack for analysis.
#4 If you cannot use Vista, approach HP about a downgrade. Many OEMs allow for a downgrade to XP but it's something you have to request. If your machine is not a dual core with at least 2GB of RAM, it's probably a good idea.
This is where Vista is different from XP. It should recover from that. After that message, it should say that explorer is restarting.
Are you rebooting before this process completes?
As long as the UI is prompting you with messages, the system is not hardlocked.
I would check in PRS (Problems Reports and Solutions) to see if there is a solution to the problem. It sounds like a video driver but could also be a bad codec, antivirus appcompat issue, etc. It depends on what windows you had open, what services where running, and what apps were running. It might very well be performance. It might not.
If explorer does not start and you are left with the desktop after explorer crashes, press ctrl+alt+delete then file>new task >explorer.exe. Be aware that you are running your desktop elevated at this point (i.e. as admin)
Task Manager has the applications going from responding to not responding every minute.
Three things
1. Uninstall any HP/OEM craplets that are on the system or block them from starting via msconfig.
2. Make sure that SP1 is installed. This is important.
3. Use Readyboost to improve performance if your system is running low on memory. You'll notice this if it is paging (which is probably what's happening)
I haven't really heard anything great about Vista myself and I can't believe that my local electronics store, and almost all of them really have resorted to just stocking up on computers with Vista. Luckily, or maybe not?, I still have the XP Professional Software, that I had to purchase for my laptop, so that if/when I get a new computer and I can't stand Vista I can use my XP... I think.
Good luck with your system. :D Oh and that inbuilt wireless built sounds great!
I hate Vista!
